Course Insight

The Subject Business is designed to complement a number of related subjects. Typically, these include Accounting, Business Information Systems, Economics, Human Resource Management and Marketing. The intention is to provide the student with the context, concepts and techniques that are relevant to a wide variety of business problems, situations and vocational areas. Doing business is one of the most fundamental human activities.

Studying Business both enhances understanding and sharpens the skills needed to participate. The business world is one of rapid (and sometimes confusing) change. It requires rigorous, methodical analysis.

Students will learn how to think in a business-like way and to recognize jargonized clutter that often passes for knowledge of Business. Not all business problems have easy solutions.

From whose perspective should we measure business advantages and disadvantages? Do we have to accept current business practices?

Course Aims

Course Content

Year 1 contains a critical overview of various contextual elements of Business such as Economics, Finance, and Marketing, Business Law and Human Resource Management. From whose perspective should we measure business advantage and disadvantage?

Do we have to accept current business practices? In Years 1 and 2 the focus is upon the Economic Environment and Strategic Business Practice while options include an Analysis of G1obalisation and Human Resource Implications. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed upon critical awareness and the development of relevant business skills.

The unit offers learners who are new to the study of business, an introduction to some of the major themes which are developed with increasing complexity throughout this specification. The unit is designed to encourage learners to make the basic connections between different aspects of business behavior. Learners are introduced to the range of business activities in public, private and voluntary (non-profit) sectors, at local, national and global levels. Business aims and objectives are introduced along with strategies for their achievement via interdependent functional areas. Plans to ensure survival and encouraging growth are also considered.

BF201 Business Decision Making

BF201: Business Decision Making

In business, good decision making requires the effective use of information. This module gives students the opportunity to examine a variety of sources and develop techniques for four aspects of information: Data Gathering, Data Storage, and the tools available to create useful information and present it. Computers are used in business for much of this, thus, the appreciation and use of appropriate IT software is central to the completion of this module. Specifically, students will use spreadsheets and other software for data analysis and the preparation of information. The use of spreadsheets for the manipulation of numbers, and understanding of how to apply the results, are seen as more important than the mathematical derivation of formula used. They will also gain an appreciation of information systems, currently used at all levels in an organization as aids to decision making.

BF202 Business Law

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the essential elements of business law. The module will begin by considering the legal environment which provides a background to the working of the legal system. The module will then move on to consider specific issues in the law of contract and tort as well as exploring the law of agency and its relation to the business world.  It is intended that the module will develop the necessary work-related skills in order that students will be equipped to understand and apply appropriate legal principles to practical business problems.

This module aims to provide the students with an understanding of the economic, political and ethical principles underlying Cyprus taxation, the sources of Cyprus tax legislation and the calculation of the tax liability of an individual, an unincorporated business and a limited company.

It builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier modules to enhance critical awareness of senior management decision-making. In order to address this complexity and generate a richer picture of organizations, the module also considers the context or environment in which an organization performs and the individuals whose actions help shape organizational performance.

BF208 Cyprus Economy in the EU Environment

BF208: Cyprus Economy in the EU Environment

The aim of this module is to provide to the student an understanding of how EU membership impacts the local economies and organizations located in European countries. The module will focus on the EU as a dynamic and evolving influence.

Assessment

The predominant mode of assessment is through coursework. Each module will have a percentage of its final mark determined in this way. This may involve individual/group presentations, problem solving exercises or data response.

Careers

Business graduates may find employment in almost any sector of the business world. The skills acquired are eminently transferable, whether you work in Financial or Industrial Management, or set up your own business or further your education.

Student’s Admissions Criteria

Ledra college accepts students regardless of gender, color, race , religion , disability , or national origin. The student admission criteria at Ledra College are examined by the Academic Committee. These have been established to determine whether the students can be placed in the appropriate programs that have expressed interest, depending on their qualifications, in order to fulfill their academic goal successfully.
Each student must be a graduate from a six – grade secondary education school or equivalent qualification. The admission of new students takes place twice a year. In September and October for the Fall semester ( A) and in January – February for the Spring semester ( B ). Applications for admission to Ledra College can be also submitted at the beginning of the Summer Semester ( June) , especially for students who are interested to attend intensive preparatory programs of English Language. Applicants must meet one of the following criteria :
1. Certificate of a six – grade secondary education school.
2. Certificate of twelve -year attendance with satisfactory performance ( 15/20 ) or equivalent for foreigners according to the country of origin .
3. Certificates G.C.E. examinations (5 O Level 2 A Level).
4. Any other certificate or qualification the Academic Committee deems equivalent to Certificate of a six – grade secondary education school.
5. The equivalent certificates are discussed and documented accordingly by the Academic Committee .
In any case that a student does not have the specific educational level, the College offers the opportunity to be part of foundation courses.

The course language at Ledra College is English. An applicant whose native language is not English has to present proof of knowledge of written and spoken English as the TOEFL grade of 500 or G.C.E O.L. or any other equivalent certification. Otherwise, the candidate will have to attend a qualifying examination of the College. If a student fails the qualifying examination will then be placed in the corresponding Preparatory Year of the field of study for which is registered .

In the case of Cypriot students, high school diploma is considered satisfactory qualification only if the degree in the English language course starts 16 out of 20 ( 16/20). If the level is between 14-15 / 20, then he is required to follow the English course offered and taught in the field of study for which they have expressed interest.

Foreign Students

In the case of foreign students, residence permit will be issued to foreign students by the time they meet the admission criteria. All necessary registration forms must be enclosed in an envelope and sent to the Admissions Office at least one month before the start of the semester. In order for the Foreign students to obtain a visa must submit to the Immigration Officer all the necessary documents. Completed application forms , documents, fees and guarantees must arrive at the applications office before August 31 for the fall semester and before December 20 for Spring Semester. The application form must be accompanied by the amount of € 150 as a right of application and which is non-refundable. Applicants who hold other academic qualification must present certified copies of their academic qualifications. In cases where academic qualifications are not in English they must be accompanied by an official or certified translation in English.

Applicants whose native language is not English will need to take a written examination set by the college. For candidates, who have a diploma of English (minimum TOEFL 500 or Grade C or hold a G.C.E.O. Level) will be exempt from the written examination and will be placed in the field of study for which they have expressed interest.
Foreign students should have a diploma with an overall grade of at least 50/100 and a degree in English language at least 50/100or a diploma with an overall grade of at least 50/100 and with a minimum level of knowledge the IELTS exam with a grade of at least five ( 5 ) or equivalent examination.
The term “equivalent examination” includes the attendance of at least one year of higher education program in English language field of study in the foreign student’s home country. Students who meet the above criteria are not eligible to enroll in preparatory programs (foundation courses). In the preparatory programs can attend only the candidates who collect score 50% or more in their Leaving Certificate but have not passed the English tests described above.

For foreign students of approved courses offered by the ISTE with the method of franchising / certification (franchise / validation) the academic admission criteria of their origin country are required.

Students studying in another Higher Education Institution and wish to transfer to Ledra College have to present at the admissions office the following documents:
1) Application for transfer
2) Academic Transcript
3) Description of the subjects who attended at their Institution
4) In case of foreign students, the approval of their transfer is finalized upon the migration officer.
